Abstract

Every year, our citrus growers must work hard and put a considerable effort to prevent citrus canker in their groves, yet the disease persists because the environment for growing citrus trees in Florida is also ideal for citrus bacterial canker (Xcc; Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri). Copper sprays have been meanly used for control of canker in Florida for more than two decades. Although copper sprays effectively control canker, some growers avoid using it because long-term use of this bactericide poses a big risk of developing a copper-resistant strain of this bacterium and over-accumulation of copper in the soil, which is detrimental for trees’ health and environment. That is why, our growers are interested in alternative products that are needed for reducing copper dependency to control citrus canker. This article is to inform our growers on new products that potentially can be added to their ‘toolbox’ for canker control in coming seasons.
