Abstract

This document provides an overview of the Carica papaya, commonly known as papaya. It describes the plant’s characteristics, including its large, lobed leaves, single trunk, and edible fruit. The papaya is a fast-growing, short-lived shrub that thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It is native to Mexico and Central America and can be used as a specimen, border, or accent plant in landscapes. The document also highlights the plant’s growth requirements, potential pest issues, and its ornamental value in addition to fruit production.  Original publication date October 1, 1999.
