Student Motivation, Attitude, and Approach to Learning: Notes From a Novice Teacher

Resumo

This paper addresses some of the student issues that affect learning.  The focus is student motivation, learning styles, and attitudes toward different teaching styles.  The key message is that students have different learning styles, which should be adequately targeted by our teaching styles.  The paper is written from the perspective of a starting professor who acknowledges the complexity of life in academia, but who is also committed to succeed in his teaching and research activities.

Eduardo Vivaldo-Lima, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico

Eduardo Vivaldo-Lima received his BSc in chemical engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (1989) and his MEng and PhD, both in chemical engineering, from McMaster University. He has had industrial experience as a Consultant and as Supplier Quality Engineer for General Motors of Mexico, and has been an External Instructor at the Universidad LaSalle, Mexico (1991) and a Teaching Assistant at McMaster University (1994-1997).
