Biomolecular Modeling in a Process Dynamics and Control Course

Résumé

I present modifications to the traditional course entitled, “Process dynamics and control,” which I renamed “Modeling, dynamics, and control of chemical and biological processes.” Additions include the central dogma of biology, pharmacokinetic systems, population balances, control of gene transcription, and large-scale biosimulation. The course places additional focus on state-space representations, multivariable systems, nonlinear dynamics, and numerical approaches, since biological systems are often nonlinear and complex. Assessment shows broad support from alumni for the biological course content.

Jeffrey J. Gray, Johns Hopkins University

Jeffrey Gray is an assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the Johns Hopkins University. He has won a Beckman Young Investigator award and the 2006 Johns Hopkins Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award. His research interests are in protein docking, therapeutic antibodies, protein-surface interactions, and allostery.
