Abstract

This work is aimed to demonstrate the use of Excel spreadsheet for solving L-L extraction problems. The key to solving the problem successfully is to be able to determine a tie line on the ternary diagram where the calculation must be carried out. This enables the reader to analyze the extraction process starting with a simple operation, the single‐stage extraction followed by the multistage countercurrent. With stage‐to‐stage calculation, a rigorous method of computing alternately between a phase equilibrium relationship and an operating line equation, the number of stages can be determined. A proper layout of the worksheet permits the use of “copy and paste” to extend the calculation to any N stages desired.
