Abstract

A problem is presented in which students were asked to determine the time required for a typical bath towel to dry using both experimental and analytical techniques.  Since correlations for the vertical flat plate geometry are readily available in many heat and mass transfer textbooks, students could compare their data to published values.  The differences between experiment and the correlations lead students to critically examine their experimental design and the basis for the correlations.
