Outcomes Assessment: Opportunity on the Wings of Danger
Special section on "ABET Engineering Criteria 2000".
This article shares observations from the field of assessment and experiences from interacting with those who are working to align their educational processes to be consistent with both the letter and the spirit of EC 2000. Both opportunities and dangers are cited in the areas of understanding continuous quality-improvement processes, the use of assessment terminology, the development of specific, measurable performance criteria, the use of local resources, the use of assessment "experts," involving students, and looking for one right answer to outcomes assessment. There are also four elements highlighted that the author feels are important to the success of EC 2000 and the improvement of engineering education.
