Take a Risk and Become a Student

Abstract

Professors are accustomed to being the expert in the room. Rarely do we step outside our comfort zone to learn a new skill, such as learning a musical instrument, a sport, a craft, or a foreign language.  Putting ourselves in the role of a beginner helps us develop empathy with how our students feel when learning new material –- awkward, frustrated, a bit upset or demoralized, wanting so badly to get a win, and euphoric when a small skill is mastered.
