Abstract

A bioprocess engineering course is described that incorporates active as well as traditional learning strategies in and outside the classroom. Unique activities include a field trip, interactive laboratory homework modules, and a class-wide team newsletter publishing project. The course design and rationale of these activities, along with assessment strategies, are described.

Author Biographies

Agnes E. Ostafin, University of Notre Dame

Agnes Ostafin is Assistant Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. She obtained her PhD at the University of Minnesota (1994) and her BS degrees in Chemistry and Biological Sciences from Wayne State University Her research interests involve the synthesis and characterization of nanoscale materials for biological and biomedical applications and application of photosynthetic bacteria for use in industrial waste treatment and environmental remediation.

Darcy LaClair, University of Notre Dame

Darcy Laclair is a chemical engineering PhD candidate at the University of Notre Dame, where she studies the bioregenerative capabilities of purple photosynthetic bacteria. She received her BS in chemical engineering at Northeastern University, where she also had the opportunity for two yearsof on-the-job internship experience  with a variety of companies.

Hartley T. Schmidt, University of Notre Dame

Hartley T. Schmidt is a chemical engineering PhD candidate at the University of Notre Dame. He received his BS in chemical engineering at Florida Institute of Technology in 2000. He is currently working on nanoscale drug delivery systems using calcium phosphate ceramic capsules as carriers for biomolecules.
