Abnormal female gonad in Xiphinema diversicaudatum (Nematoda: Longidoridae)

In two populations of Xiphinema diversicaudatum (Micol.) Thorne collected by F. Jimenez-Millan in Nov. 1964, in the district of San Rafael, Segovia (at the km 60 of the road Madrid-Avila), female specimens with abnormal genital tract were found. The population collected in the rhizospere of Pinus sp. contained two amphidelphic individuals with the posterior gonad much reduced, while two prodelphic and an opisthodelphic specimens were found in the population collected from Verbascum sp. (Fig. 1). The nematodes, which are deposited in lactophenol mounts in the collection of the ({ Instituto Espanol de Entomologia », slides 958, 960, 984 and 985, have measurements as reported in Table I. The body is slender, with a rounded lip region continuous with the rest of the body. The tail is rounded, ending with a peg in the ventral position. The position of the vulva in the opisthodelphic specimens differs from that in the others (Tab. I). Abnormal female gonads have been observed in two other species of the genus Xiphinema Cobb: X. basiri Siddiqi (Bajaj and Jairajpuri, 1977) and X. americanum Cobb (Khan et at., 1978).
