Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

JAPPD is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed, online open access journal. We welcome original submissions on politics, policy, and development in the African continent. Submission and publication are free of charge. 

Submissions to the Journal are made through our online system and accepted on a rolling basis. We request that all submissions adhere to the following guidelines upon submission.

Biography or CV

Title page

Scholarly abstract (between 150 and 250 words). Only required for extended essays. In lieu of an abstract, exhibitions should include a brief, yet informative description of the study.

The Journal of African Politics, Policy and Development is dedicated to making research open and accessible. Our publication policies allow for unconstrained research and research sharing. Authors of works published by JAPPD retain the copyright of their article, which is freely distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license, permitting the unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction of the article in any medium provided the original work is properly cited. Authors grant JAPPD the right of first publication and the nonexclusive right to publish, archive, and make accessible works accepted to the journal. Submissions should be completely original and not under consideration or accepted for publication elsewhere. Please include the following statement with your submission:

Formatting and Citation style

The preferred format for submissions is MS Word or Google Documents. Please do not submit PDFs. 

JAPPD uses the APA Manual of Style, 7th ed. Please refer to the manual for instructions on style and creating reference citations. 

All in-text citations must have a corresponding citation in the reference list and all citations that appear in the reference list must have a corresponding citation in the text. When referring to figures in the text, please do so by number (e.g., Table 1), rather than placement (e.g., see Table below). According to the APA manual of style, the reference list should be placed at the end of the manuscript.

Extended Essays

Pieces that take a lengthier, scholarly approach to dissecting issues relevant to the subject matter of the journal. Extended essays should be greater than 2,000 words in length but no more than 7,000. These pieces are peer-reviewed and indexed. There are no restrictions on who can submit to this section of the journal. 

Short Essays

Pieces that use scholarly processes to succinctly dissect issues relevant to the subject matter of the journal. Short essays should be at least 1,000 words in length but no more than 2,000. These pieces are peer-reviewed and indexed. There are no restrictions on who can submit to this section of the journal. 

Reviews

Brief reviews of books, academic works, and all other media that relates to issues of politics, policy and development in Africa. Please keep reviews between 500 and 1,000 words in length. These pieces are peer-reviewed and indexed. There are no restrictions on who can submit to this section of the journal.
