The Competitive Environment of Southeast Florida's Ports

Abstract

Port facilities, by their nature, compete with each other for the handling of cargo and its associated revenues. In the United States, an absence of national port policy and planning has heightened this competition and potentially has led to excess port capacity. Limited amounts of excess capacity are necessary to meet the needs of port users during periods of peak demand for port services. Extreme over capacity is symptomatic of a competitive port environment.
