Sinkholes cause tremendous property damage in the state of Florida (Lane, 1986; Bengtsson, 1987; Brinkmann and others, 2008). Each year thousands of insurance claims are made due to problems with foundations, wells, and other household damage amounting to millions of dollars in payouts by insurance companies (Eastman and others, 1995; Maroney and others, 2005).
