Abstract

Following egg laying in rose hips, females of Rhagoletis basiola (Osten Sacken) were found to deposit on the fruit surface a marking pheromone which deters repeated oviposition attempts by other females into that fruit. Rhagoletis basiola did not recognize the marking pheromone of R. pomonella (Walsh), which likewise infests rose hips, while R. pomonella exhibited partial recognition of R. basiola's marking pheromone.
