Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • Manuscript Preparation Guidelines and the appropriate "Template" have been consulted to help find and correct any potential problems prior to submission.
  • Organization. The organization of the manuscript follows the recommended outline, including the section headings/titles.
  • Nomenclatural Acts follow the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN 1999).
  • Referencing. All cited references are listed in the References Cited, and vice versa.
  • Citations rigidly follow Florida Entomologist’s style and punctuation as described in the Guidelines.
  • Keys and Synonymy texts are left justified, NOT hanging indented.
  • References Cited are left justified, AND hanging indented.
  • Figure Captions are listed after the last Table in the manuscript.
  • Final Clean Up has been done and the manuscript scrutinized for any problems, which have been corrected.
  • One reviewer is a native speaker of English, or the manuscript has been read and corrected by a qualified English-speaking editor prior to submission.
  • Membership in FES. I am a member in good standing with Florida Entomological Society, or one of the coauthors of this manuscript is a current member, and has a membership ID number, or I am willing to pay the additional page charges incurred by nonmembers. If you do not know your membership number, contact the society business manager (flaentsoc@gmail.com). Add the full name of the author who is a FES member in the Comments for the Editor box below.
  • Page Charges Charges per printed page are US$125 for members and US$175 for non-members, plus a $10 per page charge for posting XML in BioOne  (plus sales tax for Florida residents); this fee includes unrestricted open access. Additional costs for color display of figures apply. Typical costs of an average, 5-page article would be $675 for members and $925 for nonmembers.
  • Financial obligations. Page charges will be paid by me or by another author, as shown on the cover page. Failure to pay publication charges in a timely manner will result in refusal of Florida Entomologist to consider any future manuscripts from the authors. Fees will not be waived or lowered for any circumstance.
  • The contact author assures that all co-authors have seen this version of the manuscript and agree that the manuscript is ready for review. Be sure to list all authors and their correct email addresses on this submission form. Failure to do so will delay processing of your manuscript until the information has been provided.
  • I have followed the manuscript submission guidelines in preparation of this submission. I realize that it is my responsibility to present a clean manuscript, images, and other associated supporting documents. I am willing to follow suggestions of my Co-Editor or Associate Editors to resolve any problems to correct my manuscript to journal standards. Failure to follow these rules will result in rejection of my manuscript.

Manuscript Preparation Guidelines

Electronic submission is an easy, 5-step process

Step 1 requires that you select the appropriate section of the journal from the pull-down menu. Normally, this would be “Research Paper” or “Scientific Note”. The “Review Articles” section is reserved for literature reviews.

The submission checklist will help you understand the requirements of the journal. Read each item and click each box, which signifies that your manuscript will conform to our requirements.

The “Comments for the Editor” section allows you to provide any information you wish to convey to the editor, including suggestions of reviewers. You may suggest potential reviewers who you think will provide a knowledgeable review of your work, but reviews are blind and the editor is not obligated to use any suggested reviewers. Please provide their full name, institutional affiliation, and email address.

This is a good place to indicate any special needs, such as the addition of color images.

When you have completed this section, click the “save and continue” button.

Step 2 is uploading the manuscript. Normally, you use the browse button to select what will be loaded, then select the upload button. Use this area to upload the manuscript that will be sent to reviewers. You do not include high-resolution tiff files of figures here but can include ppt files. To include the tiff files for accepted manuscripts, please follow the instructions at this link: http://flaentsoc.org/FlaEnt_Instructions for Adding Additional Files_Revising Existing Submission.docx

Now select “save and continue”

Step 3 requires that you enter information about yourself, any other authors, plus the article title, abstract, and key words. Only boxes with an asterisk (*) are required.

Select “save and continue”

Step 4 involves uploading supplemental material. This is optional, but this is where you need to insert separate high-resolution tiff files for figures. Please name them Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc.

Here you also have the option of uploading supporting data that will occur on the WWW site but not be printed. This could include additional photographs, for example. Do not include color images unless you want color; it is best if you convert the images to black and white yourself.

Select “save and continue”

Step 5 is confirmation of submission. You need to select the “Finish Submission” button.

You and your coauthors will receive an email notification that your publication has been successfully submitted.

You can log onto the Florida Entomologist site anytime to see where your manuscript is in the review process.
