Redescription of Megisthanus Floridanus with Observations on its Biology. (Acarina: Megisthanidae)
Abstract
Redescriptions and illustrations for the adult and descriptions and illustrations of the larva, protonymph and deutonymph of Megisthanus floridanus Banks are given. The adults are associated with the passalus beetle, Popilius disjunctus (Illiger). Field collections show this mite to be most abundant on beetles taken from September to March. Mites were not randomly distributed among the beetles collected. Rearing observations indicate the life cycle takes 2 1/2 to 3 months. Larvae and nymphs constructed cells from frass material; the best constructed cells were found in cultures with low relative humidity.Downloads
