Abstract

Since the introduction of the modern workday, workers have been subject to many forms of discrimination and abuse. Although women comprised almost a quarter of the workforce, they faced discriminatory practices in the workforce and restrictive social norms. Today, women are getting closer to closing the pay gap, earning 70 cents per dollar. This improvement was hard fought, but these same principles are under pressure with the new administration. The Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Act was an Obama era act aimed at closing the pay gap by making companies accountable for offenses in the workplace. By understanding past issues, one can evaluate reasons for implementing the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Act and its effects on the workforce, and subsequently, women.
