Abstract

This study focuses on examining the paradoxical portrayal of Èṣù Odara as an uncommon sympathizer, through a hermeneutical analysis of a verse in Èṣù praise poem "Ọ bá ẹlẹ́kún níbi tí ó gbé ń ṣun ẹkún, Ó sunkún ju ẹlẹ́kún lọ; Ẹlẹ́kún ń sun omíje, Láàróyè ń sẹ̀jẹ̀". It also probes how Èṣù is often perceived as a trickster and agent of chaos, this research highlights his empathetic dimension, challenging dominant narratives that overlook his role as a cosmic mediator and emotional participant in human affairs. The methodology for this study was comprised of both primary and secondary sources of data connection. The primary data consists of in-depth interviews with Ifá priests and Èṣù worshippers in Southwestern Nigeria, while the secondary sources include scholarly articles, books, and online materials. The data gathered were transcribed and analyzed within the theoretical framework of the African Cultural Hermeneutics of Kwame Gyekye (1995). The choice of this aspect of hermeneutics is to emphasize the role of indigenous interpretation in understanding African philosophical and religious systems. The findings outcome of this study reveals that Èṣù, rather than being solely mischievous, embodies deep emotional intelligence, ethical mediation, and divine compassion, making him a unique figure in Yorùbá cosmology. The study however contributes to existing knowledge about Èṣù Ọ̀dàrà by reinterpreting Èṣù’s role within Yorùbá spirituality, correcting colonial misrepresentations, and broadening the discourse on divine empathy in African religious thought.
