A distinctive new species of Zischkaia from eastern Ecuador (Nymphalidae, Satyrinae, Euptychiina)

Abstract

We here describe a striking new species of euptychiine satyrine butterfly from eastern Ecuador, Zischkaia xenikos Willmott, Boyer & Hall, n. sp. The new species is the only species in the genus to have a white discal band on the ventral hindwing, and the male genitalia are highly distinctive. COI barcode data suggest that it is sister to a clade comprising all previously sequenced species of Zischkaia. The species is currently known from two localities, one of which lies within the largest protected area in Ecuador, Parque Nacional Yasuní, and the other adjacent to Reserva de Producción Faunística Cuyabeno.
