Abstract

This article outlines the ongoing redevelopment efforts of the Smathers Libraries’ colonnade in front of Library West, which is part of a long-term plan to enhance the aesthetic and functional appeal of the space adjacent to the Plaza of the Americas. It details the completion of phase one, which involved the removal of the eastern section of the colonnade, thereby improving visibility of the historic Smathers Library. Currently, phase two is in progress, focusing on the transformation of the entryway through the addition of garden terraces that will replace outdated landscaping and overgrown Sabal Palm trees. The proposed design includes new paved seating areas, outdoor furniture, upgraded landscaping, waste management solutions, and enhanced lighting and electrical provisions. Furthermore, the plan incorporates the relocation of the life-sized alligator sculpture “Focused Attention” by artist David Price, enhancing the cultural significance of the site. The project is projected for completion by the commencement of the Fall 2025 academic term, marking a significant milestone in the revitalization of the Library West entrance.
