Abstract

This article examines the Coffey Residency in Book Arts, an innovative program at the George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida that merges special collections research with the creation of artist's books. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the residency offers selected artists access to unique materials and collections, fostering a collaborative environment with librarians, curators, faculty, and students. The outcome is a series of editioned artist's books that reflect diverse themes ranging from nature and folklore to the intersection of art and history, inspired by the unique artifacts found within the library’s collections. The article highlights the legacy of Marjorie Strode Coffey, whose endowment supports this program, and illustrates how the residency not only enriches the Libraries' holdings but also inspires creativity and engagement among students and visitors. Through a visual and sculptural analysis of the artists' works, the research underscores the importance of artistic expression in documenting and interpreting the physical world, while also honoring the artistic vision of influential figures such as Zora Neale Hurston. The residency exemplifies the dynamic interplay between research and creative practice, contributing significantly to the cultural and educational landscape of UF.
