Abstract
This article explores the legacy of Judith "Judy" C. Russell as the inaugural George A. Smathers Dean of Libraries at the University of Florida (UF), highlighting her journey marked by innovation, adaptability, and a profound commitment to the evolving role of libraries. Beginning her career in libraries as a volunteer, Judy's transformative experiences at Comsat and her tenure as Superintendent of the U.S. Government Publishing Office positioned her as a pioneer in integrating libraries within research ecosystems and navigating the digital transition in information dissemination. As UF's first Dean of Libraries, she oversaw significant renovations and the implementation of student-centered services, establishing the library as a dynamic space for collaboration and learning. The article discusses her vision for the future of libraries, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary services and the importance of maintaining a balance between tradition and innovation. Judy's legacy is presented as a testament to the enduring value of libraries as essential partners in academic and research enterprises, reflecting her belief in the library's role as a center of curiosity, service, and community engagement. Through her leadership, Judy has redefined library stewardship, ensuring that UF Libraries continue to thrive amidst the challenges of a rapidly changing landscape.
