SoulClap: A Black Joy Journal | Call for Submissions
Join us for our inaugural issue on Black Joy and Nature!
Greetings, Beloved SoulFlowers! Welcome to SoulClap, an annual, open-access journal sponsored by OMNI Institute of Wellbeing and Florida State Open Publishing. Our mission is to shift deficit-based narratives about African diasporic people and to expand creative and academic representations of Black experience by centralizing powerful narratives of Black Joy.
SoulClap is now accepting original, unpublished work from African diasporic writers exploring the connection between Black Joy and nature. We seek submissions of creative work and autoethnographic research that consider the intersection between personal and generational experiences of joy in or through an engagement with the natural world. We invite work that considers the sacred connection between land, spirit, joy, and lived experience.
We welcome submissions in:
- Poetry: up to 5 poems, not to exceed a total 10 pages
- Short fiction: up to 2,000 words
- Creative nonfiction: up to 2,000 words
- Autoethnography: up to 2,000 words (APA 7th)
Who Should Submit?
We invite submissions from Black scholars, artists, educators, healers, students, elders and community storytellers across the African diaspora. We welcome your lived experience, research, and reflections as part of this joyful archive!
Why SoulClap?
Because joy is an act of resistance.
Because storytelling is a form of healing.
Because Black life deserves to be witnessed in its wholeness.
