Abstract
The genus Pleurothallis R.Br. is widespread from western Mexico, southermost Florida and the Antilles to southermost Brazil and northern Argentina. Perhaps as many as 300 species occur in the northwestern realm from Mexico to Panama. Williams listed 57 species from Mexico; Ames and Correll described 55 species from Guatemala; Heller found 58 species in Nicaragua; Ames (in Standley) listed 136 species for Costa Rica; and Williams (in Woodson & Schery) enumerated 55 species in Panama. Many of the above lists included Platystele Schltr. and Restrepia HBK.
