Abstract

Merlinius intermedius n. sp. was found in Oeiras, Portugal associated with tomato roots growing in a sandy loam soil. It is closely related to M. icarus and M. macrurus but differs from both species in number of head and tail annules (8-10 53-75, respectively). The range of measurements and a, b, c and V ratios of females of M. intermedius overlap some of the corresponding values of the related species. Ratios a, b and c of males of the new species are much more similar to the corresponding ratios of M. icarus. Only the highest values of the length range of M. macrurus coincide with the smallest lengths of the new species.
