Abstract

The effect of increasing inoculum densities of a Southern root-knot nematode population (Meloidogyne incognita) from Southern California on nematode levels at harvest as well as on growth and root symptoms of the nematode-susceptible bell pepper ‘Baron’, was studied in replicated greenhouse pot experiments. Pepper transplants were inoculated at the cotyledon stage or when plants had four true leaves. Results showed that this pepper cultivar was an excellent host for the M. incognita population. The maximum multiplication rate was always greater than 14,000 and the estimated equilibrium density, the inoculum density at which the reproduction rate is “1” was between 700,000 to 3 million. The pepper plants were also highly sensitive to the nematodes, as even at the lowest inoculum density plant growth was significantly reduced. Maximum reductions in fresh plant weight of about 60% occurred at inoculum densities of 10,000 to 100,000 M. incognita eggs per kg soil (10 to 100 eggs per gram soil). Delaying inoculation of pepper transplants from the cotyledon to the four-true-leaf stage did not result in significant differences.
