Abstract
In the island of Samos 160 vineyards were surveyed for plant parasitic nematodes of the genus Xiphinema and grape fanleaf nepovirus (GFLV) during the spring of 1995 and 1996. Of the three species recorded the most common was X. pachtaicum found in 49% of the vineyards. X. index, known virus vector of GFLV and X. italiae occurred in 15% and 7% of the samples, respectively. GFLV was present in all vineyards except newly ones planted with certified material. The spreading of patches of GFLV infected grapevines was coincident with the presence of X. index.
