Abstract

The fate of 1103 eggs representing 12 Aedes aegypti (L.) was studied to determine life table characteristics
under laboratory conditions. Real development mortality was low (9.8%) with death during the larval instars
accounting for 80.7% or 7.9% of all development mortality. The length of the life cycle with 8.5 days, with
the larval duration taking 6.5 days.
The sex ratio at emergence was close to 56% males. This value is similar to that found during studies on
sex ratio trends by Craig et al. (1960).
The mean observed fecundity of Ae. aegypti under laboratory conditons was 91.9% +- 17.4 eggs. The
implications for vector supression programs are discussed.
