Abstract

Orrin H. Pilkey is a professor of Geology and director of the Program for Developed Shorelines at Duke University. He is a high-profile coastal activist widely recognized for his vocal opposition to coastal development and coastal engineering solutions. The debate surrounding the protection of coastal development from beach erosion and storm damage is very passionate. Pilkey's convictions represent one endpoint in the coastal zone management debate, and his provocative opinions typically evoke much emotion. In The Corps and the Shore, Pilkey and his co-a uthor Katharine Dixon clearly illustrate the contentious nature of this debate. They quite correctly present the philosophy that coastal erosion is a natural process that becomes problematic only when development gets in the way.
