Abstract

Critiques can be used to help students understand the production and place of so-called kitsch items that can be found in dollar stores as an expression of current visual culture. This article looks into the history of kitsch to contextualize how In the classroom, educators can engage students in observing and discussing the aesthetic traits and meanings of these artifacts from the dollar store as a component of an art for life-based examination of the values embedded in these objects as a manifestation of contemporary culture.
