Abstract
Regulations are increasing regarding application of fertilizers to lawns and landscapes in Florida. The statewide Fertilizer Rule (5E-1.003) went into effect 31 Dec. 2007. This rule is through the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), which has authority to regulate fertilizer labels and sales. This rule states that any fertilizer bag weighing less than 49 lb that is sold for use on lawns or urban turf must meet new labeling requirements. The intent of the rule is to limit nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) leaching or runoff from lawn fertilization. Due to the weight limits specified in this rule, this primarily affects homeowners purchasing their own fertilizer. The rule applies to the lawn portion of the landscape only, not to shrubs, ornamentals, or bedding plants.
