CITRUS TREE NUMBERS--HAVE WE REACHED THE TOP?

Published 1998-12-01

Abstract

The results of the latest biennial Commercial Citrus Inventory conducted by the Florida Agricultural Statistics Service (FASS) reveal changing trends in planting and attrition in commercial groves. Shifts from certain varieties to others and changes occurring since 1996 will give a picture of future trends in production. Has the State reached its peak in the number of orange, grapefruit and tangerine trees? Which areas of the state are gaining trees and which are losing? What shifts in the ages of trees are occurring? The answers to these questions reveal future production potentials and will aid growers and planners in all phases of the citrus industry.
