Political Geography and Regionalism in Florida: An Analysis of Presidential Elections from 1948 to 1996
Abstract
In both the character of its population and its economy Florida differs significantly from other southern states. The state's character began to diverge from that of the other states within the region around the turn of the twentieth century. At that time it began to attract people from all over the nation, and even from abroad. When the state first became a part of the United States, it was primarily settled by people from elsewhere in the South who came to raise cotton and tobacco in North Florida.
