Abstract

Females of the lycosid spider Sosippus floridanus Simon in south-central Florida construct funnel-web snares in which the young are retained for several months and are actively fed malaxated prey. The relationship of the web to intraspecific communication and the evolution of social behavior in spiders is discussed.
