A Wheat Germ-Free, Meridic Medium for Rearing Dioryctria Abietella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae: Phycitinae)
Abstract
A meridic medium on which 3 successive generations of Dioryctria abietella (Denis & Schiffermuller) were reared is described. The artificial medium generally used to rear the insect was modified by deletion of wheat germ and addition of @a-tocopherol, linolenic acid, ergosterol, and cholesterol and by increasing the amounts of casein, choline chloride, levulose, and glucose. Although the specific nutritional requirements of D. abietella could not be determined with a meridic medium, the insect appeared to require linolenic acid for normal wing development and emergence from the pupal case. Addition of a plant sterol to the medium resulted in higher survival, growth rates, and pupal weight than when cholesterol was used alone.Downloads
