Author Guidelines

The Florida Educational Research Association uses this to manage submissions for both the Florida Journal of Educational Research (FJER) and the Annual Meeting of the Florida Educational Research Association. You will be able to select different submission types for the conference.

Guidelines for the conference follow the guidelines for the journal below.

PLEASE NOTE: certain communications from this submission system make reference to FJER by default even if you are submitting to the conference. If you selected the correct submission type, then your conference submission will not be entered into the journal review system. If you summited to the wrong area, we will be happy to assist you.

The Florida Journal of Educational Research (FJER) is the flagship publication of the Florida Educational Research Association (FERA), a grassroots professional association in existence for more than a half century. The purpose of FJER is to facilitate scholarly communication among educators and researchers in Florida and beyond. Although the Journal is the primary publication of FERA, manuscripts submitted by both members and nonmembers of the Association are considered for publication. Articles for consideration do not have to originate in the state of Florida.

Types of Studies
Manuscripts that report the following will be considered: (a) applied research, (b) basic research, (c) position papers, (d) critiques of recently published research or position papers, (e) literature synthesis and meta-analysis of research, (f) teacher inquiry studies (see description below), and (g) book reviews (see description below). When asked the type of manuscript, please use the type of manuscript listed (full label). The term research is intended to be interpreted broadly, to include evaluation; conceptual, theoretical, and policy analyses; investigations of causal and correlational relationships; case studies; educational ethnographies; historical studies; and other inquiries conducted from a variety of philosophical and theoretical orientations. Research that focuses on either processes or outcomes in education are acceptable.

Manuscript submissions are accepted electronically. Typically, manuscripts should not exceed 7000 words inclusive of tables, figures, and references. Please send manuscripts in an attached file in DOC/DOCX format to the editor; please include all graphics and tables associated with the file.

The name, affiliation, email, mailing address, and telephone number of the author(s) should be prepared on a separate title page, and only on this page, to ensure anonymity in the reviewing process. An abstract of 100-200 words should be included on another separate page. Language and format must conform to the most recent Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Any manuscript not formatted according to APA style (6th edition) will be immediately returned by the Editor. FJER Teacher Inquiry Studies

In-service and pre-service teachers and their collaborators are encouraged to submit manuscripts reporting the results of their classroom inquiries. Submissions will be peer-reviewed by members of the Teacher Inquiry Editorial Board who are current teachers and teacher educators.

Submission Guidelines for Teacher Inquiry

  • Submissions should range between 2000-4000 words. Word limits are inclusive of an abstract (150 words max), tables, figures, endnotes, and the reference list.
  • Please use 12 point font, 1-inch margins, and APA style.

When submitting a Special Issue proposal to FJER, please provide:

  • A title and abstract (max 500 words) on what the Special Issue intends to cover;
  • A rationale for the Special Issue, including its contribution to the field;
  • Your qualifications to edit the Special Issue;
  • A proposed timeline starting with the Invitation and/or Call for Papers; and

FERA 2022 Conference Symposium Proposal

A symposium provides an opportunity to examine specific problems, topics, or projects from a variety of perspectives. Papers presented in a symposium should be on the same theme and should complement each other. A symposium should provide an opportunity for presentations as well as dialogue, critique, and audience comments. Presentations should be organized within a 60-90 minute time period.

The organizer of a symposium is responsible for suggesting the topic, securing speakers, and arranging for a facilitator. If the symposium is accepted by the Program Committee, the organizer is responsible for assuring that everyone named as a participant (whether a presenter or facilitator) will be present at the meeting. If the organizer so desires, the Program Committee will secure a facilitator for the session. Should circumstances prevent a participant from attending the meeting, it is the organizer’s responsibility to secure a suitable replacement and notify the FERA Program Committee of the substitution as soon as possible. The organizer is responsible for notifying all other symposium participants. The Program Committee will notify only the organizer.

Anyone may submit a proposal, however presenters must be members of FERA and registered for the 2022 FERA Conference in order to be listed on the program. Proposals must be submitted electronically through the online FERA Proposal Submission System. Detailed instructions for using the online system can be found below.

IMPORTANT: ANY CONTACT FROM THIS WEBSITE MAY MAKE REFERENCE TO THE FLORIDA JOURNAL OF EDUCATION. IF YOU SELECTED A CONFERENCE SUBMISSION, YOU WILL NOT BE INCLUDED IN THE JOURNAL REVIEW PROCESS.

FERA 2022 Teacher Inquiry Strand

The Teacher Inquiry Strand is a series of paper sessions focused on practitioner research, which we define as systematic and intentional inquiry into educator practice situated within a particular educational context. For details about teacher inquiry, we recommend using the following book: Dana, N. F., & Yendol-Hoppey, D. (2019). The reflective educator's guide to classroom research: Learning to teach and teaching to learn through practitioner inquiry (4th Edition). Corwin Press.

All teacher inquiry proposals must have an educator as the first author. Presentations in this strand will be scheduled for the Thursday of the Annual Meeting (November 17, 2022), grouped by topic into paper sessions. Each individual paper presentation should be prepared for an average 15-minute time span.

Teachers whose papers are accepted will be asked to register in advance for the 2022 FERA Annual Meeting in order to ensure that the paper presentation is included in the program and appears in the program bulletin. Registration includes membership in FERA. The FERA conference program will include all teacher inquiry papers, research papers, graduate student posters, and symposia on topics and issues of current interest to education professionals, especially those in Florida. Typical FERA audience members include university and college researchers, district and school leaders, and teacher researchers. FERA is the state affiliate of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

FERA 2022 Roundtable Discussion

IMPORTANT: ANY CONTACT FROM THIS WEBSITE MAY MAKE REFERENCE TO THE FLORIDA JOURNAL OF EDUCATION. IF YOU SELECTED A CONFERENCE SUBMISSION, YOU WILL NOT BE INCLUDED IN THE JOURNAL REVIEW PROCESS.

FERA 2022 Roundtable Discussion

This is the first time FERA will hold a roundtable format at FERA. Presenters will discuss
an ongoing research project. This format is best suited for small group discussions. The Round
Table format provides an excellent opportunity for researchers to share ideas that may still be in
a formative or developmental phase and receive feedback through the dialog that ensues as
participants engage in conversations about related issues and research proposals. Participants
will be grouped by topic and there will be a chair to facilitate interaction. The session tables will
be arranged to maximize discussion and interactions with 10 individuals at most per table. This
session will be scheduled for 75 minutes with 4-5 presenters at a time. There will be no
audiovisual equipment or audio at the session. If you wish to use a laptop, please make sure it
is fully charged since there might be no power source available.
