Abstract

Students pursuing careers in the health professions have access to a range of digital flashcard resources to support their studies in gross anatomy. A conventional anatomy flashcard found on online flashcard platforms typically displays an image where students are prompted to identify structures through symbols, numbers, colors, or arrows. However, they lack the functionality for students to actively interact with a flashcard when prompted. To address the need to enhance skills necessary for proper identification, the educational technologies department at our institution developed a unique web-based flashcard tool that calls for active interaction with donor body images. The researchers equipped the first-year medical, dental, and physician assistant students with this supplemental resource to aid their study of gross anatomy. Participants were provided with a mixed-methods survey to gather perceptions of the tool’s usefulness. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were performed on the survey data. Results indicated an overwhelming positive response to the usefulness of the flashcard tool to prepare for anatomy laboratory practical exams. Students offered valued feedback to contribute to the evolution of the tool for future generations of health professional students.
