The End of Cynicism

Abstract

The photo on the cover of this issue comes from Zuccotti Park on October 13, 2011 and is a document of the encampment’s citizen media committee: Self-produced, DIY media by and for the movement through audio and video podcasts, web presence, and collaborative media projects, mostly distributed via social media. It’s funny, in retrospect, because the Occupy Movement was always branded in the press as a social media movement – that always felt like a lazy narrative to me - but this wasn’t just inconsequential Facebook slacktivism. It was the result of a very real agenda of collaboration and cooperation, action and mobilization.
