Abstract

An experiment for teaching mixing intensification in reaction engineering is described. For this, a simple tubular reactor was constructed; helical static mixer elements were fabricated from stainless steel strips and inserted into the reactor. With and without the internals, the equipment operates as a static mixer reactor or a laminar flow reactor, respectively. The reaction experiment allows an assessment of changes in the reactant conversion and the pressure drop due to the static mixing.

Sergio A. Baz-Rodríguez is a professor of chemical engineering at Universidad Autónoma

de Yucatán, México. He received his BSc at Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (2005), his

MSc at Instituto Tecnológico de Celaya (2008), and his PhD at Universidad Autónoma

Metropolitana – Iztapalapa (2012), at México. His main field of research is transport

phenomena in multiphase systems, particularly mathematical up-scaling of momentum and

mass transfer in gas-liquid, solid-fluid and porous media, CFD and experimental mass

transfer in bioreactors.

Yucatán, México. He received his BSc at Instituto Tecnológico de Celaya, México (1969),

his MSc at Instituto Politécnico Nacional, México (1977), and his PhD at University of

Texas at Austin, US (1984). His fields of research include separation processes by

liquid-liquid extraction, distillation, and supercritical conditions.
