On the Importance of Imbedding Creativity in Engineering Education and Relevant Lessons from Agile Organizations' Principles

Abstract

Due to the structured format of most engineering courses, the number of opportunities for engineering students to view matters differently from the traditional ways is limited. Therefore, a mandatory requirement was introduced into three engineering courses for students to propose an out of the ordinary solution to certain technical problems, allowing them to unleash their creativity. The results are presented in this paper with analogies to practices within agile organizations.

Bahman Ghorashi, Tennessee Technological University

Dr. Ghorashi is Professor of Chemical Engineering and former Provost and Vice President at Tennessee Technological University. Prior to that, he served as Executive Director of Fenn Academy and Fenn Research and Development Institute and Dean of Engineering at Cleveland State University. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees from The Ohio State University and his B.S. degree from Wayne State University. He holds a management and leadership in education (MLE) certificate from Harvard University.
