Embracing the Value of Belonging in Chemical Engineering Education

Abstract

Student success goes beyond overall aptitude for the technical aspects of chemical engineering. The intangible components, like feeling valued and part of the community, can increase confidence, academic performance, well-being and likelihood of persisting in the field. Therefore, this article highlights innovative practices, from learning communities to outreach activities, that intentionally cultivate belonging in chemical engineering. We conclude with key takeaways and practical guidance for adapting these strategies within your own chemical engineering contexts.

Reginald E. Rogers, Jr., University of Missouri, United States

Dr. Reginald E. Rogers, Jr. is an Associate Professor and the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Missouri. He has published and given multiple presentations on valuing belonging while training the next generation of scientists and engineers. He has received multiple accolades, including the Mizzou Alumni Association Gold Standard Distinguished Faculty Award, for his efforts in the classroom, research laboratory, and other mentoring settings.

Sarah A. Wilson, Rowan University, United States

Dr. Sarah A. Wilson is an Associate Professor in Experiential Engineering Education at Rowan University. Guided by the motto “We can’t design better systems until we care about the people inside them,” she researches mental health using participatory, data-driven methods. She partners with students to co-create support strategies and has led international workshops on mental health. She supported development of University of Kentucky’s NSF-funded Engineering Wellness Center and received the Ray W. Fahien Award for educational innovation.
