Lessons Learned from Over 30 Years of Incorporating Behavior-Based Safety into a Unit Operations Lab

Abstract

This paper celebrates the success from 30+ years of our student led behavioral based safety (BBS) program at the MTU unit operation laboratory.  Students are immersed in a mature BBS program designed to emulate industry and ensure that they are developing real-time hazard analysis thoughts.  Our most efficient BBS vs. course structure is shared, along with key lessons learned.

Daniel Kulas, PhD, is a Research Assistant Professor and Adjunct Assistant Professor in Chemical Engineering at Michigan Technological University. He has co-taught the unit operations course for the past three years. His research interests focus on waste valorization and plastic pyrolysis. He earned his PhD from Michigan Tech.

Jeana Collins, Michigan Technological University, United States

Jeana Collins, PhD, is the Gary Sparrow Endowed Faculty Fellow and a Teaching Professor in Chemical Engineering at Michigan Technological University. She joined the faculty at Michigan Tech in 2016 and has taught about half of the core courses in the undergraduate curriculum, as well as two elective courses. She has taught the senior capstone unit operations sequence for the past six years.
