Factors Influencing Graduating Senior Chemical Engineering Job Offers: Insights From 12-Years of Pre-Graduation Surveys

Abstract

Surveys over a 12-year period of graduating chemical engineers at a major non-regional university were used to evaluate key associations between undergraduate activities and obtaining a job offer. The undergraduate activities include working toward a high GPA, club participation, multicultural experiences, working as an intern, and research activities. Each of these activities is statistically associated with obtaining a job offer either directly or indirectly. Other job offer details, including salary, provide additional insights.

Clint Guymon, PhD, is an associate teaching professor in the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department at Brigham Young University (BYU). He develops laboratory activities as part of the TIPICE group and teaches laboratory and safety classes. He was previously a safety and test equipment engineering consultant in the explosives and defense industry.

Lavdie Huff, Brigham Young University, United States

Lavdie Huff is an academic advisor in the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department at Brigham Young University (BYU). With a background in teaching, Lavdie has served as an adjunct instructor at both Utah Valley University and BYU, bringing valuable experience and insight into her advising work. She is passionate about helping students succeed and is committed to providing personalized guidance to students as they pursue their educational and professional goals.

Randy S. Lewis, Brigham Young University, United States

Randy S. Lewis, PhD, is a professor in the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department at Brigham Young University (BYU).  He conducts research in the biochemical and biomedical engineering areas. Randy also leads the BYU Global Engineering Outreach Alliance where students and faculty from many disciplines across campus develop and implement projects in Ecuador, Bolivia, and Peru.  Randy currently serves as Chair of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Education and Accreditation Committee.
