If We Can Do It, So Can You! Assessment at Two R1 Universities in Florida

Abstract

Research-intensive institutions with large student enrollment have unique challenges when building and sustaining learning outcomes assessment culture and practices. Out of curiosity and a genuine desire to enhance the effectiveness of their institutions’ assessment models, three Public R1 institutions in Florida (UF, FSU, and USF) collaborated to develop this session highlighting USF and FSU. The collaboration that has generated this proposal was born out of the background of a continuous improvement history shared among the institutions across the Florida State University System. Assessment professionals’ generosity in sharing information with their colleagues at other System institutions has led to developments across the board. The collaborative method of improvement is through showcasing current models of how similar, yet distinct institutions can address challenges by creating effective assessment systems across a wide range of disciplines while demonstrating compliance with institutional accreditation standards. By working together, we have found the things that work and, importantly, the things that don’t work in the process of maintaining a strong assessment process.
The session will describe the results of how the collaborative effort resulted in implementing best practices and avoiding pitfalls across the participating institutions. In conclusion, we will engage in discussion about each institution’s ‘assessment wish list’ and create a space for attendees to explore their own creativity in improving assessment processes at any size or type of institution or within their department, program, or course. The presentation will showcase how collaboration can bring assessment professionals closer to success, rather than allow competition to stifle innovation.
