Students at the Frontlines: How College Students Transformed Civil Rights in Leon County
Abstract
In this research project, I explored the events of the Civil Rights Movement that happened in Tallahassee, Florida, the home to Florida A&M University, an HBCU that played an important role in the Civil Rights Movement. I conducted this project by first carrying out a literature review exploring actions taken by Civil Rights Movement activists in the Tallahassee area. Then, I analyzed an qualitative interview with a local participant in the Civil Rights Movement The interview was carried out by Jackson Lee Ice Jr. The interviewee was Rev. Moses G. Miles. This interview was an oral interview that was uploaded to FSU’s Oral History Project. My goal was to identify gaps in our knowledge about the contributions of Tallahassee activists to the broader Civil Rights Movement, and furthermore explore college students’ contributions to the movement.
