Editorial Team Position Descriptions
COORDINATING EDITOR: The Coordinating Editor is responsible for the day-to-day activities of the journal. Although they are not assigned submissions, they do need to know how to perform all duties related to every submission type and step to ensure the smooth operation of the organization. They are in charge of reading all submissions and assigning them to the correct Area Editor for processing as well as setting up and ensuring the production schedule is maintained. The Coordinating Editor is responsible for maintaining the NFJA email account, WordPress site and FOJ site (see NFJA Manual). They are also responsible for making sure that all submissions are being processed correctly and in a timely manner. The Coordinating Editor is also responsible for maintaining legacy documentation, including but not limited to the Constitution, SOP’s, and accounts documentation, as well as ensuring that these documents are transferred to the incoming team members.

AREA EDITOR(S): The Area Editors are related to the following subfields: Sociocultural, Biological Anthropology, Medical Anthropology, Archaeology, and Linguistics. These will be updated as needed to reflect the changing needs of the journal. Area Editors are responsible for following NFJA submission and review procedures related to their area or subfield. Although Area editors are principally responsible for submissions in their subfield, these duties are shared between the Editorial Board as a whole and all board members should provide support for one another and fill in when necessary to ensure the success of the journal. The specialty of the Area Editors may change depending on the needs of the journal (e.g., Medical Anthropology Editor). They are responsible for managing research articles and NFJA Notes in their subfield. In conjunction with the DEIA Editor, they are also responsible for handling non-English submissions in their subfield as well.

MANAGING COPYEDITOR: The Managing Copy Editor is responsible for all copy-editing procedures related to all written submissions as well as materials written by NFJA, and to supervise any additional copy editors.

VISUAL MEDIA EDITOR: The Visual Media Editor is responsible for all video abstracts, and visually based submissions (e.g., ethnographic films, photographic essays).

REVIEW EDITOR: The Review Editor is responsible for all book review submissions including soliciting publishers for publications to undergo review. They are also responsible for handling dissertation abstracts and conference reviews.

DIRECTOR OF FUNDS: The Director of Funds is responsible for leading fundraising efforts and grant proposals to support NFJA initiatives, as well as for keeping a record of all incoming and outgoing funds for NFJA. The spending account ledger is kept in Teams. They should present an up-to-date account of the NFJA finances at each meeting, as well as an annual report of all accounts at the end of the spring term. The Director of Funds must also stay apprised of all policies and procedures for using the UFF account and work closely with Karen Jones of the Anthropology main office for ordering (see FINANCES). All spending must be approved by the Editorial Board and handled by the Director of Funds.

SOCIAL MEDIA COORDINATOR: The Social Media Coordinator is responsible for managing all NFJA's social media accounts. They will also develop and create content to share on these platforms, and respond to comments, in consultation with Editorial Board when needed. The login information for all media platforms can be found in Teams. Guidelines for social media posts can be found in the NFJA Manual.

DEIA EDITOR: The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility Editor primary responsibility to ensure accessibility of all NFJA materials so that they are in accordance with the American Disabilities Act (ADA). They are also responsible for reviewing submissions received that are written in other languages. It is the editor’s responsibility to find suitable peer-reviewers for manuscripts submitted in other languages in coordination with the appropriate Area Editor. They are not actively responsible for directly translating the document but are responsible for communicating with the submitting author and ensuring compliance with NFJA guidelines for publication.

PERSPECTIVES EDITOR: The Perspectives Editor is responsible for managing submissions to the Perspectives in Anthropology section. They are to solicit submission to this section, as well as guide them through the publication process. The submissions are not peer-reviewed and thus it is the job of the Perspectives Editor to recommend edits the author should make before publication. If they choose, they can propose themes for the Perspectives in Anthropology section for each issue (e.g., discrimination in fieldwork etc.). They are expected to communicate regularly with the editorial board on the progress of their submissions.

FACULTY ADVISOR: The student organization advisor shall serve as a mentor on best practices of the publication process. They act as a representative of the Anthropology Department and the University of Florida on the Editorial Board by ensuring legal matters and issues of policy are followed. They also assist in maintaining NFJA institutional memory by managing access to records of SOP’s, websites, and email access, and any NFJA documentation. They will recommend suggested changes to policy or practice within NFJA to aid the editors in their professional development.
