Issues in Modern Medicine in Zuni, New Mexico

Abstract

Previous studies have been conducted to analyze chronic illnesses, most prominent being type 2 diabetes mellitus, within the Zuni tribe in New Mexico. These studies also examined previous efforts to alleviate the challenges associated with these chronic diseases. This study analyzed Zuni people’s perceptions of these studies, the factors contributing to chronic illnesses, and access to healthcare within their community. This study reports statements from community members during group conversations and data collected while touring areas in the community including the Pueblo Cultural Center, a horticulturist’s garden, museums, a veterinary clinic, an eagle sanctuary, and a craftsman workstation. It was found that some community members are more receptive to Western medicine and clinical care, but others are not due to cultural beliefs relating to traditional medicine. Evidence suggested that type 2 diabetes mellitus was a prominent disease in their community due to a reduction in cultivation and an increase in the consumption of processed foods. Furthermore, the Zuni people have limited access to basic healthcare due to insufficient government funding, the location of the healthcare facilities, services like trauma assistance, and resources like supplemental oxygen. Some members do have a strong preference for traditional medicine, but for others it is not adequate to manage their diseases. Implications can be drawn following this study to improve healthcare within the Zuni community by preventing chronic illnesses, improving treatment for those already diagnosed, and enhancing future research that may be conducted by outside researchers.
