Abstract

Introduction: Vasomotor symptoms, including hot flashes and night sweats, affect up to 80% of menopausal women and can significantly impair quality of life. Although hormone therapy is considered the most effective treatment, it is not appropriate for all women due to contraindications or personal preference. Nonhormonal, evidence-based alternatives are needed to address this gap in care. This evidence-based practice project evaluated the effectiveness of oral vitamin E supplementation in reducing hot flashes among menopausal women.

Methods: A structured literature review was conducted using PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health, and the Cochrane Library. Peer-reviewed articles published between January 2020 and January 2025 were included. Studies examining oral vitamin E supplementation for vasomotor symptom management in menopausal women were identified and appraised. Six articles met inclusion criteria, including three randomized controlled trials, one systematic review, one quasi experimental study, and one clinical practice guideline.

Results: All included studies demonstrated a reduction in the frequency and severity of hot flashes with oral vitamin E supplementation. The most consistently supported dosage was 200 IU administered twice daily for eight weeks, with minimal adverse effects reported. Higher doses up to 800 IU daily may offer additional symptom relief but warrant caution in women receiving anticoagulant therapy.

Discussion: Oral vitamin E is a safe, accessible, and cost-effective nonhormonal intervention for managing vasomotor symptoms. Nurses play a critical role in patient education, symptom monitoring, and implementation, particularly for women who cannot or choose not to use hormonal therapy.
