Chełmno: The Nazi’s Most Peculiar Killing Center

Abstract

  Opened in December 1941, the Chełmno killing center was the first facility set up by the Nazis to murder Jews via gassing. Its layout, location, and operations are vastly different from the other killing centers: Auschwitz, Treblinka, Sobibor, and Belzec. While the other killing centers were in secluded areas away from the public eye, Chełmno was in the middle of a town inhabited by hundreds of people, many of whom witnessed the horrific atrocities committed there. Also, most of Chelmno’s buildings were converted from older ones (several of which were kilometers apart) while most of the buildings used in the other killing centers were built from scratch. Lastly, the organization of Chelmno’s labor force, its killing process, and transportation methods all stood in stark contrast to the other killing centers. Emphasizing these differences can encourage further study on Chełmno and generate interesting discussions on classifying and defining the Nazi killing centers.
